The major reason of the defeat of Winfield Scott in the year 1852 was his antislavery wing alignment of the party of the Whig. This party fell apart because of the tension internally over the slavery expansion to some of their territories. Because of this, the faction of anti-slavery prevented the nomination of President Fillmore in the year 1852 but instead, they nominated General Scott.
