What characteristics must a society have in order for capitalism to be possible?

Generally speaking, in order for a society to function well in a capitalist framework, there must be democracy and property protection, since this allows business not only to make the products they think will sell, but it also ensures that nobody will steal their intellectual property, which would diminish incentives.
