Louis XIV. had a relatively low passion for oppressing people. He tolerated uprises and demonstrations in Paris and when the "mob" became annoying to him, he moved to Versailles. Defining that as "poor leadership" would turn Josef Stalin into a perfect leader. That cannot be accepted. "Leadership" is more than "oppression". Philosophes and social theorists developed new theories of state forms during the time of Loius XIV, which costed the monarchy its "head", in the meaning of the word (Stalin would have sent those philosophers to Siberia, at best). Something comparable like it happened to Louis XIV can happen to any leader, it is not a criteria for good or bad leadership. (JFK was not a bad leader because he was assassinated). It is therefore not so clear if LouisXIV was a "poor leader". He had other preferences like his 23 children, 6 being legal and 17 from relationships outside of marriage. And according to offcial statements the number "17" includes only the known ones.
