The 14th Amendment was backed by supporters of the abolition of slavery and by groups of immigrants benefitted by this constitutional reform. It granted citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the United States and it guaranteed equal protection of the laws. The Republican-controlled Congress and states legislatures passed the amendment. President Andrew Johnson had some objections, he had some differences with the Republicans over how the Reconstruction effort should proceed.
