    Let the unknown number be x.

    The difference between a number and three: x - 3

    is multiplied by - 6: - 6 (x - 3)

    The result is 18: - 6 (x - 3) = 18

    Part B.

    Now we solve our equation for x.

    -6 (x - 3) = 18

    Divide both sides by - 6.

    x - 3 = - 3

    Add 3 to both sides.

    x = 0

    The number is 0.
