The ratio of dogs to cats in an animal shelter 3:1. If there are 56 dogs and cats in all, how many more dogs than cats are there?

    There are 18 cats! (well, 18.6, so you could round it up to 19 ...)

    3:1 is a fancy term for 1/3

    so 56 divided by 3 is 18.66666
