X+Y=8 "" X=8-Y
now we can substitute X with 8-Y in the second equation, which was X-Y=2
X-Y=2 "" (8-Y) - Y=2 "" 8-2Y=2 "" 2Y=8-2 "" Y=6/2 "" Y=3
since X=8-Y, and Y=3, so X=8-3=5
X=5 and Y=3
