A way to solve this is to write a proportion and equation.

    Step one, the proportion: # of lawns / hours 4/6 = x/9

x = number of lawns Mitch can mow.

    Step two, the equation: 4/6 = x/9

    -Cross multply

    - you'll get, 6x and 36

    - divide six from 6x and 36 to get the variable by itself (1x or x, and 6.)

    - you'll now be left with, x = 6

    Your answer is 6 lawns!

Mitch and mow 6 lawns in 9 hours!
