What two numbers add to negative 12 and multiply to get 18

    Factorising 2x^2-13x+18

    2x^2-13x+18 is a quadratic in the form ax^2+bx+c. The first step to factorise it is to write out the factors of the c term, the factors of + 18 are + / - 1 and + / - 18, + / - 2 and + / - 9, or + / - 3 and + / - 6. We know that one of these sets of factors will be the 2 constants in the factorised double brackets form of this function, to find out which set of factors we see which factors will add together to equal b, although because a=2 one of the factors is multiplied by 2 so actually we want to find out which set of factors add together to equal b when one of the factors is multiplied by 2, b=-13, and 2 (-2) + (-9) = - 13, so the 2 factors are - 2 and - 9, the next step is to put them in the brackets and don't forget the 2 has to be on one of the x's, and - 2 has to be in the opposite bracket, 2x^2-13x+18 = (2x-9) (x-2)

    If they add to get a positive answer and multiply up to a positive number, both of them are positive

    if they add to a negative answer and multiply to a positive, both of them are negative

    if they add to a negative and multiply to a negative, one of them is positive and one of them is negative.

    if they add to a positive and multiply to a negative, one of them is positive and one of them is negative.

    with this information, we know your answer is both negative answers.

    however i am not sure if the answer is whole because i have - 10 and - 2 to be - 20 but - 11 and - 1 is - 11, so the answer is between there.
