to add fractions, you must have the same denominator or the bottom number of the fraction. 1/5 and 7/8 have a common denominator of 40. you can get a common denominator by multiplying the two together. once both of the denominators are 40, you need to multiply the numerator by the same number as you did the bottom like this. 1/5 * 8/8=8/40 and 7/8 * 5/5=35/40. now that you have your converted fraction, you can add everything. 8/40 + 35/40=43/40 or 1 3/40. Now add 1 3/40, 23 and 45 to get 69 3/40.
