Growing up, Lisa lived in a tiny country village. When she left for college, the population was 840 people. Lisa recently heard that the population had grown by 5%. What is the current population?

    10% = 84 (840/10)

    5% = 42 (84/2 or 840/20)

    therefore 840+42=882

    If there are 840, then you can multiply it by 1.05 to get the answer. This is the same as finding 5% of 840 and then adding that to 840, but this does it in one computation. 840 * 1.05 = 882

    The current population would be 882.
