Given a mean of 43.8 and a standard deviation of 8.7, within how many standard deviations of the mean do the values 60, 40, 35, 45, and 39 fall?

    Work each one out as follows

    value 60 -

    answer = (60 - 43.8) / 8.7 = 1.862 This is sometimes called the x score

    for 40 its (40-43.8) / 8.7 = - 0.4368

    the others are calculated in the same way
