Researchers measured the data speeds for a particular smartphone carrier at 50 airports. The highest speed measured was 78.7 Mbps. The complete list of 50 data speeds has a mean of x=18.51 Mbps and a standard deviation of s=36.78 Mbps. What is the difference between carrier's highest data speed and mean of all 50 data speeds?

We have that the highest speed that the researchers measured was 78.7 Mbps. The mean of the whole data set was 18.51 Mbps. We need to calculate their difference which is: 78.7-18.51 = 60.19 Mbps. This is a very large difference, since it is around triple the mean. This implies that the observations were widespread and that justifies the high variance of the sample.
