During a 55 -year period, 45 % of snowstorms in a certain city caused power outages. Thirty-three of the snowstorms did not cause power outages. Find the total number of snowstorms in this city over the 55 -year period.

P. S. First, find the percent of snowstorms that did not cause power outages. Write this percent as a part-to-whole ratio. Find an equivalent ratio with the appropriate number as the numerator.

    Percentage of snowstorms did not cause power outage = 100-45=55%

    55% = 33

    1% = 33/55 = 0.6

    100% = 0.6 x 100 = 60

    The total number of snowstorms in this city over the 55-year period is 60.
