Well this is how much money he has in his wallet I'm assuming is 12 X 4 is 48 then 48-10 is 38, he has $38 in his wallet

We start with - $12 an hour for 4 hours so we multiply:

    -$12 * 4 = - $48

then his wife gives him $10:

    -$48 + $10 = - $38

since we are looking for change and not loss or gain the answer is $38

The whole problem can be written out as (-12*4) + 10
