    There was more purple.

    Step-by-step explanation:

1/4 of 36 is 9 pencils, or 25% of the pencils.

1/3 of 36 is 12 pencils or 33% of the pencils. That is significantly more.

    Purple

    Step-by-step explanation:

1/4 (9 pencils) is less than 1/3 (12 pencils), so more pencils were purple.
