    The width of rectangle is 5 inches

    Solution:

    Given that perimeter of the rectangle = 38 inches

    Length of the rectangle = 14 inches

    Need to calculate the width of the rectangle.

    Formula for perimeter of rectangle is as follows

    Perimeter of rectangle = 2 (length of rectangle + width of rectangle)

    Let assume width of rectangle be represented by x.

    On substituting given values of perimeter and length and assumed value of width in formula of perimeter we get,

    38 = 2 (14 + x)

    Solving above equation for x we get

    38 = 28 + 2x

    => 38 - 28 = 2x [subtraction is used]

    => 10 = 2x [division is used]

    => x = 5

    Width of rectangle = x = 5 inches.
