Fran borrowed money from me. First he borrowed $4.00 to go the dance and then he asked for $9.00 more another day for some food. How much money in all did Fran borrow?

Since Fran is borrowing it is going to be a negative integer:

$-4.00 + - $9.00 = $-13.00

So Fran owes $13.00!
