A pipe that is 136 inches long is cut into three parts whose lengths are in the ratio 3 : 5 : 9. Find the length of the shortest piece.

    3x+5x+9x=136

    17x=136

    x=8

    The shortest piece is 3x, or 24 inches long.

    136: 17=8

    8 * 3=2 4
