    The value of x is equal to 2.

    4 (x + 1) = 12 (3 - x)

    Distributive property on both sides.

    4x + 4 = 36 - 12x

    Add 12x to both sides.

    16x + 4 = 36

    Subtract both sides by 4.

    16x = 32

    Divide both sides by 16.

    x = 2
