What is the y-value in the solution to this system of linear equations?

4x + 5y = - 12

-2x + 3y = - 16

    -4 because:

    you would start by isolating one of the variables, either x or y. in this case, i chose to isolate the x in the second equation. so we started with:

    -2x+3y=-16

    add 2x to both sides so

    3y=2x-16

    add 16 to both sides so:

    3y+16=2x

    divide both sides by 2 so:

    x=1.5y+8

    now plug this value for x into the first equation in the place of x so:

    4 (1.5y+8) + 5y=-12

    simplify some so:

    6y+32+5y=-12

    combine like terms and then subract 32 from each side. so:

    11y=-44

    divide both sides by 11. so:

    y=-4
