Make bottom number same
12=2*2*3
9=3*3
LCD=2*2*3*3=36
-7/12 times 3/3=-21/36
-5/9 times 4/4=-20/36
the farther a number is on the number line to the left, the bigger it is
-20/36 is closer to left
-5/9=-20/36
-5/9 is bigger
