    Using completing the square:

    (3x+2) (x-4) = 0

    3x^2 - 12x + 2x - 8 = 0

    3x^2 - 10x = 8

    3 (x^2 - 10x/3) = 8

    3 ((x - 10/6) ^2 - (10/6) ^2) = 8

    3 ((x - 5/3) ^2 - (5/3) ^2) = 8

    3 ((x - 5/3) ^2 - 25/9) = 8

    3 (x - 5/3) ^2 - 25/3 = 8

    3 (x - 5/3) ^2 = 49/3

    (x - 5/3) ^2 = 49/9

    x - 5/3 = ±√ (49/9)

    x - 5/3 = ± (7/3)

    x = (5/3) ± (7/3)

    x = 12/3, - 2/3

    x = max (12/3, - 2/3) = 12/3

    x = 4
