Multiply both the numerator and denominator of each fraction by the number that makes its denominator equal the LCD. This is basically multiplying each fraction by 1.
Complete the multiplication. The two fractions now have like denominators so you can add the numerators.
Therefore, 1/8 + 1/3 = 11/24.

Explanation:
1/8 + 1/3 = 3/24 + 8/24 = 11/24
because 24 is the most common multiple.
