If an ant has six legs, then:

Two ants have 12 legs Three ants have 18 legs Four ants have 24 legs Five ants have 30 legs Six ants have 36 legs Seven ants have 42 legs Eight ants have 48 legs Nine ants have 54 legs

So, if you saw between 35 and 50 legs, there are between six and eight ants.
