An airplane (mass 1865 kg) starts out sitting on a runway at sea level, at rest. It then climbs to a cruising altitude of 2420 meters and a constant cruising speed of 96.5 m/s. Assuming no force from air resistance, what work did the engine have to do in order to let the plane reach that height and that speed

    Work is said to be done if the force acting on an object causes the object to move through a distance.

    Work done = Force * distance

    Given mass of airplane = 1865kg

    Force = mg = 1865*9.81

    Force = 18295.65N

    Distance covered = 2420metres.

    Work done by the engine = 18295.65*2420

    Work done by the engine = 44,275,473Joules

    = 44.28MJ
