diffraction occurs when light passes around the edges of an object, it can be defined as the slight bending of light as it passes around the edges / corners of an object / obstacle. the amount of bending depends on the relative size of the wavelength of light to the aperture (size of the opening). larger the opening of the object than the light's wavelength, lesser will be the bending (diffraction).
