A car with a mass of 950 kg moves at 24 m/s. What braking force is needed to bring the car to a halt in 10 s?

    F = ma ... Equation 1.

    Where F = brake force needed to halt the car, m = mass of the car, a = acceleration of the car.

    Also

    a = (v-u) / t ... Equation 2

    Where u = initial velocity of the car, v = final velocity of the car, t = time.

    Given: u = 24 m/s, v = 0 m/s (as the car comes to halt), t = 10 s.

    Substitute into equation 2.

    a = (0-24) / 10

    a = - 24/10

    a = - 2.4 m/s²

    Also given: m = 950 kg

    Substitute into equation 1

    F = 950 (-2.4)

    F = - 2280 N

    Hence the braking force needed to bring the car to an halt = - 2280 N

    Note: The force is negative because its act against the motion of the car
