Two plates separated by a distance d = 12.8 mm are charged to a potential difference V = 7.25 V. A constant force F = 8.31 N pushes a - 8.30 mC charge from the positively charged plate to the negatively charged plate. Calculate the change in the kinetic energy Δ K, potential energy Δ U, and total energy Δ E of the charge as it travels from one plate to the other. Assume the initial speed of the charge is 0.

    Answer: ∆K = 0.031 J,

    ∆U = 0.0602 J,

    ∆E = 0.1064 J

    Explanation:

    assuming initial voltage is zero

    kinetic energy, ∆K = QV/2 = (0.0083 x 7.25) / 2 = 0.031 J

    Potential energy, ∆U = Q∆V = 0.0083 x (7.25 - 0) = 0.0602 J

    Total Energy, ∆E = Force x distance = 8.31 x 0.0128 = 0.1064 J
