A Carnot heat engine uses a hot reservoir consisting of a large amount of boiling water and a cold reservoir consisting of a large tub of ice and water. In five minutes of operation of the engine, the heat rejected by the engine melts 0.0400 kg of ice. During this time, how much work W is performed by the engine?

    efficiency of Carnot engine

    Temp of source - temp of sink / Temp of source

    higher temperature - lower temperature / higher temperature

    = 373 - 273 / 373

    = 100 / 373

    = work output / heat imput

    = work output / work output + heat rejected

    heat rejected =.04 x 336000

    = 13440

    so

    100 / 373 = W / W + 13440, W is work output

    373W = 100W + 1344000

    273W = 1344000

    W = 4923 J
