Suppose two stars are located in region a of the h-r diagram shown in the figure below. Star X appears much dimmer that Star Y as seen from Earth. Which Star can be inferred to be nearer to Earth, and how do you know?

    We can infer that star Y is closer but other factors must be considered include the heat of the star, the mass, and the brightness of the star. Even though star X seems dimmer it may just be less bright or contains less heat.
