Water is a good solvent for many substances. what is the molecular basis for this property and why is it significant?

    Water is a good solvent because it is composed of oxygen which has a negative charge, and hydrogen which has a positive charge. Because of this, water is able to become attracted to other types of molecules and disturb the forces that hold them together, thus, dissolving them.
