You are assigned to develop instrumentation to measure the properties of a brine formation, located 900900 meters deep. Assume the instruments will feel an equivalent amount of pressure to the amount of hydrostatic pressure felt at the bottom of an 900900 meter high column of brine, with a specific gravity of 1.351.35. To what hydrostatic pressure, in units of atmospheres, must the instrumentation be built to withstand?

    117.3 atm

    Explanation:

    The hydrostatic pressure is given by P = ρgh where ρ = density of brine = 1.35 g/cm = 1.35 * 10³kg/m³, g = 9.8 m/s and h = 900 m

    P = ρgh = 1.35 * 10³kg/m³ * 9.8 m/s * 900 m = 1.1907 * 10⁷ N/m²

    Since 1 atm = 1.015 * 10⁵ N/m²,

    The hydrostatic pressure in atm is 1.1907 * 10⁷ N/m²/1.015 * 10⁵ N/m² = 117.3 atm.

    So, the instrument should be able to withstand 117.3 atm of pressure
