A sample of gas with a volume of 750 mL exerts a pressure of 98 kPa at 30◦C. What pressure will the sample exert when it is compressed to 250 mL and cooled to - 25◦C?

    Explanation:

    Using the formula for general gas equation

    P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2

    P = pressure V = volume T = temperature in Kelvin

    Since 0°C = 273K

    30°C = 30+273 = 303K

    -25°C = - 25+273 = 248K

    Given P1=98kPa V1 = 750mL T1 = 303K, P2=? V2 = 250mL T2 = 248K

    Substituting into the formula to get P2, we have

    98*750/303 = P2*250/248

    P2 = 98*750*248/303*250

    P2 = 18,228,000/75,750

    P2 = 241kPa.
