Two satellites, X and Y, are orbiting Earth. Satellite X is 1.2 * 10^6 m from Earth, and Satellite Y is 1.9 * 10^5 m from Earth.

Which best compares the satellites?

Satellite X has a greater period and a faster tangential speed than Satellite Y. Satellite X has a greater period and a slower tangential speed than Satellite Y. Satellite X has a shorter period and a faster tangential speed than Satellite Y. Satellite X has a shorter period and a slower tangential speed than Satellite Y.

    M*G = 5.98*10^24*6.674*10^-11 = 4.0*10^14

    1) Satellite X

    g = M*G / ((6.37+1.2) * 10^6) ^2 = 4.0*10^14 / (7.49^2*10^12) = 7.130 m/sec^2

    g = 7.130 = V^2 / (r+h)

    V = √7.130*7.49*10^6 = 7308 m/sec

    T = C/V = (6.2832*7.49*10^6) / (7.308*10^3) = 6440 sec

    2) Satellite Y

    g = M*G / ((6.37+0.19) * 10^6) ^2 = 4.0*10^14 / (6.56^2*10^12) = 9.295 m/sec^2

    g = 9.295 = V^2 / (r+h)

    V = √9.295*6.56*10^6 = 7809 m/sec

    T = C/V = (6.2832*6.56*10^6) / (7.809*10^3) = 5278 sec

    Satellite X has a greater period and a slower tangential speed than satellite Y
