Groups are vertical columns in the Periodic Table and they contain elements with similar properties. One characteristic is that each member of a group has the same number of electrons in the outer level. This holds true for groups 1-7. Because each element has the same number of electrons in the outer shell, they tend to have similar properties (second characteristic).
