A layer of oil (n = 1.45) floats on an unknown liquid. A ray of light originates in the oil and passes into the unknown liquid. The angle of incidence is 65.3 degrees, and the angle of refraction is 64.8 degrees. What is the index of refraction of the unknown liquid?

    Let unknown liquid's refractive index be n'

    According to Snell's law, n sin i = n' sin r

    Angle of incidence = i = 65.3

    Angle of refraction = r = 64.8

    1.45 sin 65.3 = n' sin 64.8

    ⇒ n' = 1.45 sin 65.3 / sin 64.8

    = 1.46
