A state patrol officer saw a car start from rest at a highway on-ramp. She radioed ahead to another officer 28mi along the highway. When the car reached the location of the second officer 27min later, it was clocked going 60 mi/hr. The driver of the car was given a ticket for exceeding the 60 mi/hr speed limit. Why can the officer conclude that the driver exceeded the speed limit?

    distance = 28 mi

    time = 27 min

    car speed limit = 60 mi/hr

    to find out

    conclude that the driver exceeded the speed limit

    solution

    we calculate here avg speed from mean value theorem i. e

    avg speed = (total distance) / (total time)

    avg speed = (28 - 0) / ((27/60) - 0)

    avg speed = 62.22 mi/hr

    so we can say that that driving car is more speed than the speed limit because avg speed is that car is 62.22 mi/hr
