The intensity of electromagnetic waves from the sun is 1.4 kW/m2 just above the earth's atmosphere. Eighty percent of this reaches the surface at noon on a clear summer day. Suppose you model your back as a 25 cm * 52 cm rectangle. How many joules of solar energy fall on your back as you work on your tan for 0.90 h? Answer in Joules.

    4.7 * 10⁵J

    Explanation:

    E = I * a * t

    80% = 0.80

    25cm = 0.25m

    52cm = 0.52m

    0.90h = 3240s

    E = (0.80) (1400) (0.25 * 0.52) (3240)

    = 4.7 * 10⁵J
