    In the following years there was a relevant third-party or independent campaign for president:

    In 1968, George Wallace was an independent party candidate who earned about 9 million votes in the popular vote and 46 electoral college votes. Wallace was running against Republican candidate Richard Nixon and Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey.

    In 1992, Ross Perot was an independent party candidate who earned about nineteen million popular votes even though he failed to win any from the electoral college. Perot ran against Democratic nominee Bill Clinton and Republican nominee George H. W. Bush.
