In the case of Lebanon and Syria, these had been colonies of the Ottoman Empire and were assigned to France as part of the Mandate System, although they did not belong to France as the Mandate System ended around 1946 and they were independent states. Thus, the country that lost control of both Lebanon and Syria following the end of the Mandate System was France.
