A democracy where the people elect agents to represent them in political decision-making is called "Republic".

Republic is a Latin word which means "the public thing", and the idea behind is that the supreme power rests with the people and these people elect their representatives for political decision making. The power in such cases is not private or monarchial in nature and cannot be inherited by generations of rulers.
