The body of water located north of Iran is called the Caspian Sea. It is the largest body of water surrounded completely by land. It is often referred to as the world's largest Lake, located between Europe and Asia and it is surrounded by 5 different countries. This body of water is known as an endorheic basin, which means the whole body of enclosed water does not connect to any outflows as rivers or the sea. The countries surrounding the Caspian Sea are Kazakhstan to the northeast, Russia to the northwest, Azerbaijan to the west, Iran to the south and Turkmenistan to the southeast. It currently lies approximately 28 meters below sea level. The deepest section of the lake is located in the southern part of the lake and it goes as low as 1,023 meters deep, making it the second deepest natural depression on earth, second to lake Bikal in Russia. The Caspian Sea has a surface area of 371 thousand square meters and a volume of 78,200 cubic kilometers. Its salinity of 1.2% is about one-third of the average salinity of seawater
