According to Emile Durkheim, the division of labor is focused on a shift in society from simple and traditional to modern and complex.

Durkheim believed that in traditional societies people were homogeneous who shared values, backgrounds, and religious beliefs. He also believed that modern and complex societies are made up of peoples who have a variety of values, backgrounds, and religious beliefs.
