In February 1898, U. S. S. Mainevand, U. S. navy ship, sank in the harbor of Havana and served as a contributing factor for start of the Spanish-American War (April 21, 1898 - August 13, 1898). Yellow newspapers paid a great deal of attention to this matter.

At the end of the 19th century, media outlets were typographically plain with few small illustrations. Meanwhile, from 1897 large colorful and often provocative illustrations were introduced into yellow newspapers. Thus, hunting self-promotion, many newspapers were playing with an emotional response from their readers regarding the destruction of the U. S. S. Mainevand, and as a result, fueled the start of the war.
