How do medieval love songs compare to modern one?

Where modern love songs leave nothing to the imagination, medieval love songs need to be interpreted. The latter often contains hidden messages written under pseudo names. Possible reasons could include the following: gay relationships/lovers, unrequited love or seeking love outside your social status. Proclaiming your love for someone meant having to do so in secret whether it be through a metaphor or even an epic battle scene. Modern love songs nowadays even include names as every artist is entitled to his/her freedom of speech.
