What is the most significant factor that controls the development of soil

    I think that it's climate: if the climate is dry, soil will be dry too, and not too many plants will grow. Similarly, a warm or cold climate will make a big difference, and the composition of soil will also be different is the climate is distinguished by different seasons or more homogenous.
