Why was Amendment 14 significant to citizens residing in the United States?

    On july 28, 1868, the 14th amendment to the U. S constitution was ratified. The amendment grants citizens to 'all persons born or naturalized in the U. S' which includes former slaves who had just been free after the civil war.
