Magna Carta from 1215 was the first document to place limitations on the English Monarch's authority. According to this document, the king and his government do not have absolute power. It influenced the development of our government in the following ways:

Magna Carta laid the groundwork for the English Bill of Rights (1689), and later the United States Bill of Rights (ratified in 1791), which imposed limitations on the power of the government in judicial proceedings. This document guaranteed civil rights and liberties for the American people, including freedom of speech and religion. It also guaranteed rights of accused persons in criminal cases. Magna Carta's guarantee of the right to a trial by jury, a body of citizens entitled to make judgments in the majority of civil and criminal cases, also became practiced in the US law. In Magna Carta, it is also insisted that without the 'general consent of the realm' taxes could not be imposed, which later had an influence on our government institutions.
