    Morehouse College, formerly know as Augusta Institute was founded in 1867 by the Rev. William Jefferson White, a civil rights leader, minister, educator, and journalist in Augusta, Georgia. The college was formed with the encouragement of the Rev. Richard C. Coulter and the Rev. Edmund Turney of the National Theological Institute.

    The College was created to educate black men for careers in ministry and teaching. Notable alumnis of the school include Martin Luther King Jr., theologian Howard Thurman, filmmaker Spike Lee, filmmaker Robert G. Christie (a. k. a. Bobby Garcia), actor Samuel L. Jackson.
